Update: The addition of a lid over the sump pump well has made the basement much dryer.
A couple weeks ago we noticed the basement had a couple of inches of water on the floor which was surprising since we had a new sump pump installed at the end of 2013.

Dehumidifier on left and sump pump well to its right when the basement is dry.
Our sump pump and dehumidifier had been keeping our basement nicely dry until now.

Charlie was walking on gallon paint cans to keep his feet dry.
If the water in the basement gets too deep it interferes with both the furnace and water heater.

Charlie very cleverly replaced this worn out submersible sump pump with a new one.
Charlie pumped the standing water from the floor with his portable pump then installed a new, 1/3 horsepower Zoeller pump which I picked up at Lowes.

The wall panel in the upstairs hall has been repurposed.
Then we took one more step which I hope will keep the basement even dryer or at least less humid. Using his new anniversary saw blade he cut a notch into the board that had been the plumbing access panel in the upstairs hallway.

The sump pump well cover sits on the basement floor.
I’m not sure the cover will last but I think it will keep the well from evaporating into the air and maybe reduce the burden on the dehumidifier.

A small update.
I hope nothing else breaks for awhile.
